Shanklin's Camping
A group of us decided to take a weekend and go camping and float fishing at Shanklin's Ferry. It turned out to be a pretty good set up. We took Austin's parent's popup camper, which is signifintatlly superior to a typical camping tent. I was able to take that Friday off so I went up early with Austin to set up camp and fish a morning float before the others arrived. The fishing all weekend was a little slow, but productive. The difference from Friday and Saturday, weather wise, was night and day. Friday was bright and sunny with highs near 80 degrees. Saturday was overcast and rainy with highs in the 50's. I managed to catch 44 fish in those two days, one was about 3 pounds with a few more in the 2 pound range. I also caught the New River trifectia of a smallmouth, redeye, and bluegill. On top of all that I decided to test the limits of the Coosa and took it down Harvey's Ledge. With the water up it was close to a class 3 rapid. It was a little dicey, but I made it through intact. We decided to pop smoke a day early because the weather was supposed to deteriorate even more on Sunday with highs in the low 40's, and because WVU was playing Texas that night. The Mountaineers topped of a near perfect weekend with a win over the Longhorns. All and all it was a great weekend.
